Here's how it averted the crisis<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ffa4ecc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ffa4ecc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"ea-article-body-content\"><p>Cape Town\u2019s water crisis got so bad last year that there were competitions to see who could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/environment\/2019\/04\/cape-town-water-conservation-south-africa-drought\/587011\/\">wash their shirts<\/a> the least. Restaurants and businesses were encouraging people <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CityofCT\/status\/895223130242895872\">not to flush<\/a> after going to the toilet. The city was just 90 days away from turning off the taps.<\/p><p>A year on, the South African city\u2019s parched dams are now <a href=\"https:\/\/coct.co\/water-dashboard\/\">over 80% full<\/a>. Water use restrictions have been relaxed. And Day Zero \u2013 the point at which Cape Town\u2019s municipal water supply would be shut off \u2013 never came to pass.<\/p><p>Having been threatened by one of the worst-ever drought-induced municipal water crises, residents became water-wise.<\/p><p><strong>A city united<\/strong><\/p><p>In a dry climate, with rapid urbanization and relatively high per capita water consumption, Cape Town had all the makings of a water crisis. In 2018, after three years of poor rainfall, the city announced drastic action was needed to avoid running out.<\/p><p>Reducing demand was a key priority. The City of Cape Town worked to get residents and businesses on board with a host of water-saving initiatives. People were instructed to shower for no longer than two minutes. A campaign with the slogan \u201cIf it\u2019s yellow, let it mellow\u201d promoted flushing the toilet only when necessary.
